GDL Made Easy a step-by-step Graduated Driver's License guide for parents compliments of

Education

15-years 4- months: Attend a Free Parents Night sponsored by Myers Driving School. This seminar is designed to help bring you up to date on the current GDL Laws and give you valuable tips on teaching your teen how to drive.

15-years 5-months: Ohio GDL Laws permit your teen to complete the 24-hour classroom portion of a Drivers Education Course before obtaining a Temporary Permit. Enroll them now. Capture their

attention when they are MOST attentive and interested. By acquiring a basic knowledge of what to do, when to do it and why it is done, your teen will feel much more confident during their first few hours

on the road. Good habits formed early will last a lifetime. Bad ones are hard to break!

15-years 5 1/2-months: Have your TEENSAFE Passenger-Side Safety Brake installed. Eliminate unnecessary stress during those first few hours on the road. Give yourself and your teen the peace of mind of knowing that you have control of the vehicle. Installation is usually complete in less than 30 minutes.

15-years 6-months: Purchase a Temporary Permit License Packet. This can be done Monday through Saturday at any License Bureau. Study the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws. Original Temporary Permit must be purchased 6 months before eligible for driving exam.

NO DRIVING PRIVILEGES YET!

Your teen must now pass a Vision Exam (glasses/contacts) and a computerized Temporary Knowledge Test. (75% required)

This test may be taken at any Driver Exam Station (DX) Tuesday through Saturday. No appointment is necessary.

Contact your Insurance Company. Let them know that your teen has obtained a Temporary Learners Permit and is ready to drive. The ID Card and Red/White Temporary Permit must be carried at all times when driving.

Under 16- may drive with a parent, legal guardian or licensed driving instructor ONLY.

16 or Over- may drive with any licensed driver 21 or older.

Reminder: The required 50 hours of driving in the GDL Laws may only be completed with a parent or legal guardian.

NAVIGATION: YOUR TEEN IS NOW PERMITTED TO DRIVE!

Contact your teens' driving school to inform them that they are ready to begin their in-car instruction. 8-hours of instruction is required by law. These sessions are usually completed in four 2-hour sessions. You may wish to spread these out over the 6-month waiting period or complete them all at one time.

PARENTS STOP DRIVING! This may require extra time; but whenever possible let your teen drive. Be sure to plan some actual lessons with your teen. Think about where you would like to take them and what you would like them to learn. Expose them to as many environments and weather conditions as possible.

50-hours may appear to be a lot of driving, but think of how many hours a week you actually spend behind the wheel. With this in mind, 200-300 of driving over the 6-month waiting period can easily be completed.

With the added assurance of the safety brake in your vehicle, you can now relax and let the driving begin! Contact your driving school if you have any questions or concerns.

Practice maneuverability with your teen at least once per month.

15-years 11-months

Ensure all in-car lessons have been completed with your teens driving school.

Obtain a Drivers Education Certificate and retain it in a safe place.

15-years 11 1/2-months: Contact any Driver Exam

(DX) Station and schedule your teens maneuverability & driving exam.

Fill out a Family Agreement or similar contract. Set the rules and expectations for your teen now to avoid any confusion later.

EXAMINATION!

TEENSAFE Passenger Brake

Professional driving instructors never enter a roadway without the security of a passenger-side safety brake. Why would you?

The safety brake is designed for on-road parental driver training required in the new GDL Licensing Laws. Now parents can train their teen with the same level of SAFETY, CONFIDENCE and COMFORT as professionally trained instructors.

Q & A of BRAKE RENTALS

Q: What is a safety brake?

A: It is the same passenger-side brake that our professional driving instructors use.

Q: How does it operate? Is it easy to use?

A: It operates with the power, performance and feel of a driver- side brake and is very user friendly.

Q: How long will it take to install?

A: Installation is usually completed in fewer than 30 minutes. Removal takes even less.

Q: Is it going to damage my vehicle?

A: No. One self-tapping screw is used to secure the brake on the drivers side. A simple carpet screw secures the passenger side. This installation process virtually eliminates any visible damage to your vehicle.

Q: How do I know that it is safe?

A: The Safety brake has been inspected and approved by Ohios State Highway Patrol.

Q: Im not sure that I want to install something that will alter the brake system in my vehicle. How can I be sure that it wont?

A: A simple cable connection from the safety brake to the drivers brake pedal controls the unit. It will not alter nor involve the brake system on your vehicle.

Q: How do I prevent it from accidentally engaging when I am not driving with my teen?

A: The brake is equipped with a locking pin. The pin (or your own padlock) is easily installed when the brake is not needed to prevent this from occurring.

Q: How will a safety brake benefit us?

A: The brake allows you to expose your teenager to many different driving environments without the fear of an accident. It also creates a safer learning environment for your teen by reducing the stress level in the vehicle.

Q: Is it expensive? Do I have to sign a rental agreement for a specific amount of time?

A: The brake rental is affordably priced. There are no long drawn out contracts. You decide on the rental plan that will fit your needs.

Q: What forms of payment are accepted?

A: We accept Visa, MasterCard, checks and cash.
